President's Message

CACS President Kingman Louie

2012 is progressing at a record pace. We are on target to support our community. CACS was recently recognized at the Angel Island Immigration Station luncheon for our donation of $5,000 to support Phase II of Angel Island’s renovation project. In addition to participating at Frank Fat’s Pacific Rim Street Festival this past May, we are going to have a booth at the Chinatown Mall Culture Fair on Sept. 23.

Much needed school supplies are ready to be delivered in September through our Cares for Kids program. Thank you Dr. David Young for your hard work and dedication to this program. Our energetic board is already doing some preliminary work in launching this year’s Operation Santa Claus in December.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our 25th Gold Mountain Celebration at Happy Garden Seafood Restaurant on October 5, 2012. It will be a very special occasion in that we are honoring two very special individuals that have given so much to our community, namely Dr. Sonney Chong and the late Dr. Douglas Yee. Many of our past Presidents will be in attendance too.

Thank you for your continued support. We couldn’t achieve all this without you.

Respectfully,
Dr. Kingman Louie

Respectfully,

Dr. Kingman Louie, 2012 CACS President

On June 3, CACS members attended the Angel Island Immigration Station luncheon at the Tsukopoulos Library Galleria downtown Sacramento. The organizing committee, Lana Fong Chong, Joyce Eng, Lina Fat and Lucienne Wong, invited Angel Island officials to share the information on Angel Island restoration and the “Immigration Heritage Wall” to friends and families in the Sacramento area. The Immigration Heritage Wall will display plaques honoring the history of Chinese families that immigrated through Angel Island.

CACS donated $5,000 for a plaque in memory of CACS founder Frank Fat and CACS Lifetime members Roy Wong, Dr. William Fong, Jim & Chau Louie, Connie King and Dr. Douglas Yee. The delicious luncheon was provided by Fat’s Catering.

OCA Dragon Boat Festival

On May 5, Organization of Chinese Americans Sacramento celebrated this traditional holiday, also known as the Double Fifth (fifth day of the 5th lunar month), which has been deeply rooted in Chinese culture. The festival is a time to reflect on the importance of loyalty and commitment to the community. CACS was a table sponsor at this event. It was a time to celebrate our heritage and honor distinguished community leaders. The program includes scholarship and essay writing contest award recipients to children and youth.

The honorees for that evening were Steve Yee and Carlota Gutierrez, for the Civil Rights/Social Justice Award Recipients; Chevo Ramirez, Wells Fargo Foundation for the Community Service Award Recipient; and Asian Resources, Inc. for the Community Partner Award.
